Alcatel GO FLIP 3 and Alcatel SMARTFLIP launch in the US

TCL Communication Announces the Alcatel GO FLIP 3 and Alcatel SMARTFLIP, the first flip phones with Google Assistant. Smart feature phones aren’t a thing of the past, nor are they for low-income individuals only. Quite the opposite: two new models hitting US stores this month show that there’s growing demand for smart feature phones by new audiences in North America.

With their ability to withstand shock better than the typical smartphone, their impressive battery life, their affordability, as well as their retro charm, the Alcatel GO FLIP 3 and the Alcatel SMARTFLIP cater to outdoor workers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, senior citizens, and minimalists.

The newest additions to the line of smart feature phones by Alcatel – the first model was the Alcatel GO FLIP, launched in 2017 – the GO FLIP 3 and the SMARTFLIP, like their predecessor, come with 4G LTE connectivity, which makes voice calls clearer and more natural-sounding; a quad-core processor, which helps increase overall speed; a 4GB built-in memory that can be stretched to 32GB of expandable microSD memory storage; and battery that lasts up to 7 hours of continuous 4G LTE talk time.

What sets the GO FLIP 3 and the SMARTFLIP apart is that they also support Google Services – including Google Assistant, YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Search.

Users of both devices will be able to send emails, surf the web, watch videos, use voice command to complete tasks, and choose from over 150 apps to download from the KaiStore. (Click here to see all the apps.)

Those interested in buying the Alcatel SMARTFLIP can do so at AT&T and Cricket Wireless starting today. The Alcatel GO FLIP 3 will be available at Metro by T-Mobile by the end of the month and at T-Mobile in October.

KaiOS Technologies and Facebook bring WhatsApp to millions of  smart feature phones

Hong Kong, <22 July 2019> – KaiOS Technologies, maker of KaiOS, the leading mobile operating system for smart feature phones, and Facebook, the social networking company whose goal is to bring the world closer together, today announced WhatsApp’s availability for download in the KaiStore, on both 512MB and 256MB RAM devices. Further, by Q3 2019, most smart feature phones powered by KaiOS will have WhatsApp preinstalled upon shipment. Facebook is already available on KaiOS phones in India, Africa, Europe, and APAC.

“KaiOS has been a critical partner in helping us bring private messaging to smart feature phones around the world. Providing WhatsApp on KaiOS helps bridge the digital gap to connect friends and family in a simple, reliable and secure way.” said Matt Idema, COO of WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is a messaging tool used by more than 1.5 billion people worldwide who need a simple, reliable and secure way to communicate with friends and family. Users can enjoy voice recording and messaging capabilities and more, all with end-to-end encryption that keeps correspondence private and secure. WhatsApp was first launched on the KaiOS-powered JioPhone in India in September of 2018, and now with today’s broad release, the app will reach millions of new users across Africa, Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, Latin America and beyond.

“We’re thrilled to bring WhatsApp to the KaiOS platform and extend such an important means of communication to a brand new demographic,” said Sebastien Codeville, CEO of KaiOS Technologies. “We strive to make the internet and digital services accessible for everyone and offering WhatsApp on affordable smart feature phones is a giant leap towards this goal. We can’t wait to see the next billion users connect in meaningful ways with their loved ones, communities, and others across the globe.”

KaiOS currently powers more than 100 million devices shipped worldwide, in over 100 countries. The platform enables a new category of devices that require limited memory, while still offering a rich user experience. Together with its partners, Kai aims to close the digital divide by bringing mobile connectivity to the billions of people without internet in emerging markets, as well as providing those in established markets with an alternative to smartphones.

Mobile 360 Africa: Educate to empower panel discussion and new GSMA partnership

We were onsite in Kigali this week for GSMA Mobile 360 Africa, where we discussed the rise of the digital citizen across the continent. Given the fact that mobile connectivity is at an all-time high (200 million individuals connected to 4G since 2014, according to GMSA intelligence) and technology continues to drive change within every aspect of society, it was exciting to connect with others working to eliminate the digital divide.

Key takeaways from the educate to empower panel discussion

On Tuesday, July 16, we sat alongside representatives from Orange, Safaricom, Prepclass, Mara Phone Rwanda, Bankable Frontier Associates (BFA), and DialTel, as they discussed the true impact of the fourth industrial revolution.

The panelists emphasized that in order for Africa to be a part of, or even lead the fourth industrial revolution, a local tech ecosystem is mission-critical. This doesn’t just mean ensuring that hardware production and software development are taking place regionally (although Mara Phone provided an excellent example of that), it means ensuring that there are educational resources to equip people with the skills and information they need to be successful, not just knowledgeable. In other words, teaching someone to code, but also how to manage a product, prioritize a product roadmap, etc.

There was also much discussion surrounding the role governments can play; pushing digital transformation, generating demand for such skills, and creating opportunity for actual work experience. Governing bodies also hold the power to make tech skills a part of a high school curriculum, instead of waiting for university, which is still reserved for middle class or those with greater personal wealth.

Mobile Internet skills training toolkit for KaiOS-powered smart feature phones

Millions of people gain access to the internet for the first time every year, but a “usage gap” of 3.2 billion people around the world remains. One of the biggest barriers to adoption, alongside affordability, is digital illiteracy, which is why KaiOS Technologies and GSMA are excited to announce that a new Mobile Internet Skills Training Toolkit (MISTT) specifically designed for KaiOS-powered smart feature phones, is coming later this year.

The visual, easy-to-follow curriculum will integrate into the existing MISTT materials and cover topics from internet safety to using Facebook, and everything in-between. It will also serve as a how-to guide for local carriers, retail staff, and users themselves to better explain smart feature phones and the many important features/services they host.

These training materials are further testament to KaiOS Technologies and GSMA’s dedication to eliminating the digital divide, as they serve as a transition to digital literacy and encourage the connection of the next billion users.

Kai joins forces with Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) to Advance Internet Accessibility

Most of us are familiar with the expression, “It takes a village.” When it comes to bridging the digital divide — the phrase is particularly apropos. Given Kai’s dedication to this mission and technology solution,  A4AI invited the company to join in their quest to find a solution to this widespread inequality. The 2018 Affordability Report released by A4AI sheds light on the magnitude of the issue, as well as the challenges many within the digital divide are facing. According to the research, more than 2.3 billion people live in an area where even just 1GB of mobile data remains out of reach due to cost. This greatly impacts low- and middle-income economies,  where the cost of 1GB of data is more than 5% of their average monthly income — a price that is well over the affordable threshold of 1GB of data priced at 2% or less of average income. In fact, only 24 of the 61 countries assessed in the report have what is considered affordable internet; further illuminating the extent of the problem.
As the study concludes, the high cost to connect is keeping billions offline and pushing the global goal of universal internet access further out of reach. That’s where A4AI comes in. As the world’s broadest technology sector coalition — comprising over 90 member organizations from across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors in developing and developed nations — they’re working to drive down the cost of internet access through policy and regulatory reform.
Together with like-minded companies and organizations, including Google, Microsoft, Intel, and WorldWideWeb Foundation, Kai is proud to support these collective efforts to reduce the cost to connect, and close the gap to make universal, affordable internet a reality for all. Check back on our blog for regular updates on Kai’s latest partnerships and programs as we continue to focus on expanding widespread access to mobile internet and offering advanced digital services.
