We worked really hard to create a thorough FAQ for you, which is able to answer 90% of all questions we are currently asked!

What is KaiOS?

KaiOS is a USA-based company with additional offices in France, Germany, Taiwan, India, Brazil, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Our operating system currently powers phones in Canada, the United States, and India through partnerships with Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Reliance Jio. Before the end of 2017 people in several more countries will get access to the powerful suite of KaiOS features.

KaiOS originates from the Firefox OS open-source project started in 2011, and has continued independently from Mozilla since 2016. Today, KaiOS is a lite operating system based on HTML5. It combines the power of a smartphone with the affordability of a feature phone.

How is KaiOS different from other operating systems for mobile devices?

Devices running KaiOS use little technical resources to perform their tasks. Our development teams always strive to reduce memory usage and other requirements. For this reason, KaiOS-powered devices perform tasks previously only possible on expensive smartphones. Think of features like running an app store, video calls, watching live TV, and so on.

KaiOS also provides new services to our partners. Examples are FOTA (over the air updates of the phone), cloud services, and analytics around network stability and connectivity.

Which devices is KaiOS compatible with?

We are currently focused on mobile phones, but our platform is suitable for other connected devices (IoT) as well.

Where is the app store?

The KaiOS Store is not live yet. It will be released on a country-by-country basis. For more specific information, we recommend to contact your mobile operator or other service provider.

Where can I get more apps?

Once the KaiOS store is live, you will have access to a variety of apps. For specific information about release dates, we recommend to contact your mobile operator or other service provider.

The content of the app store in India is determined by Reliance Jio. For more information about the JioPhone, JioStore, and apps please check here.

Does KaiOS support Android apps?

KaiOS does not support Android apps. These apps need to be adapted to HTML5-based apps that can run on the KaiOS platform.

Can contacts be imported from Google Contacts?

Good news, that is totally possible!

Go to: “Contacts” -> “Settings” -> “Import Contacts” -> “Gmail”

Can I develop apps for KaiOS?

KaiOS is a curated platform for apps and we are working closely with app developers to provide the best experience for our users. At the moment we are not accepting submissions into the Store, but will do so in the future.

Can I access the source code?

KaiOS is based on the Firefox OS open-source project and we are committed to abide by the rules of the applicable open source licenses. Therefore, we’ll make the source code available to the extent required by the applicable open source licenses.

Kindly note that we are not a device vendor and thus we are not responsible for product specific software. If you have any product specific question, please contact the respective device manufacturer (OEM) for more information.

Which general features can I find on KaiOS?

The features can vary per device depending on the manufacturer. Generally speaking, KaiOS supports all standard features like voice calls, text messages, contacts, camera, calendar, music, clock, and email.

Once the KaiOS Store is live, you can also expect many apps and functionalities that you find on most smartphones!

Does KaiOS support video calls?

KaiOS supports many features including video calls. In case it does not work on your device, please check if the feature has been launched in your region. Your mobile operator should be able to provide you with this information.

I have a problem with my phone, how can I solve it?

KaiOS is not a device vendor and thus the product is not owned by KaiOS. We are working with OEMs (device vendors) and the products are under their control.
