Barcelona, <25 February 2019> – KaiOS Technologies today announced Life, a tool for users of KaiOS-powered smart feature phones across Africa and South East Asia to better leverage their internet access and make the most of the digital resources at their disposal. In line with Kai’s mission to help close the digital divide, Life will come pre-installed on most KaiOS-powered handsets and will comprise a directory of curated content in categories like women’s empowerment, health, education, agriculture, financial inclusion, and digital skills.
Sebastien Codeville, CEO of KaiOS Technologies, said: “The majority of people who get a KaiOS-powered phone are going online for the first time. Life helps them find digital content and services that are relevant, genuinely useful, and will make their lives easier.”
Life was built following extensive research by the Kai team and involves collaborations with a number of organizations that support the platform in the form of content, apps, or websites. These organizations include, Esoko, Funzi, Girl Effect, Topfarming, Wefarm, and Worldreader. As part of the Life initiative, Kai also built a Digital Skills app to help people learn the basics of the internet, with topics such as internet navigation, privacy, security, social media, and more.
KaiOS-powered smart feature phones are rolling out across Africa through partnerships with MTN, Orange, and Ooredoo, as well as with a number of other local carriers and manufacturers. To date, more than 80 million devices powered by KaiOS have been shipped to over 100 countries.
Kai’s mission is to bring mobile connectivity to the billions of people without internet in emerging markets, as well as to provide those in established markets with an alternative to smartphones.
